The use of diatomaceous earth knows no bounds, and has many applications in cosmetic, agricultural, and cleansing realms. It’s been extensively investigated and some interesting benefits have been discovered.
What is food grade diatomaceous earth (DE)?
Diatomaceous earth is made from the fossilized remains of tiny microscopic, aquatic organisms called diatoms like plankton and algae to name a couple. Their skeletons are made of a natural substance called silica. Over a long period of time, diatoms accumulated in the sediment of dried up fresh water rivers, streams, and lakes. Today, silica deposits are mined from these areas. Food grade diatomaceous earth also has a high concentration of silica, which makes it good for hair, nail, teeth and skin health. It also has a negative charge, which proves to be more than useful when it comes to several health problems.
How does food grade diatomaceous earth (DE) work for unwanted pests?
The diatomaceous earth will work on virtually any insect that crawls. Food grade DE is not poisonous; it does not have to be eaten in order to be effective. Food Grade DE works by contact causing insects to dry out and die by absorbing the oils and fats from the cuticle of the insect's exoskeleton. Its sharp edges are abrasive, therefore leaving lacerations/cuts thus speeding up the process. It remains effective as long as it is kept dry and undisturbed. DE can be used both inside AND outside your home. Use it on your pets as an all natural flea and tick control powder as well as an all natural internal method for parasitic/worm control.
DIRECTIONS OF USE FOR PETS W/FLEAS (general)
Written by: Craig Hoefler Dec. 21st 2016
A fleas egg cycle is anywhere from 1-2 weeks. You should be leaving the diatomaceous earth for this long in the areas where your pet most travels. The longer you leave it the better. When using on your pet directly leave on him/her for 36-48hrs before washing off. Simply bathe your pet as normal to remove the DE. Coconut oil and some shampoos will help if your pet gets dry skin during the treatment.
Do this treatment 2-3 times weekly for 2-2 1/2 wks. You can apply by 1) Sprinkling on your pet directly and rubbing into the fur by hand (dustier method in my opinion) or 2) Taking handfuls and gently rubbing the DE into the coat. Be sure to be careful to not get the DE in your pet's eyes. If this occurs flush with water thoroughly until irritation is gone. Another safety tip while applying is to wear a dust mask. Like any dust or powders it is usually not good to inhale them, however if you happen to get a little in your nose or accidentally inhale a little not to worry, it is non-toxic and harmless to people and pets. Only the industrial grade DE used in water filtration is absolutely toxic and harmful to inhale so if not using the "Utopian Earth" food grade DE be sure to check your labels to ensure you are using ONLY food grade diatomaceous earth.
Another trick for taking care of an infestation is to line/coat baseboards, window sills, under couches and area rugs with DE. This will help to keep away any fleas (also works for all other insects that crawl) that may be trying to get in and will dehydrate any that happen to be present and crawl through the area you treated. Also looking for flea eggs on your pet and picking them out manually with a comb or by hand will help, along with 3-4 vacuums daily (for carpeted areas) in the areas you don't use diatomaceous earth. Make sure to empty the canister/bag after each vacuum to make sure the fleas don't just crawl back out and re-infest. Also don't be afraid to re-use some of your diatomaceous earth. Any excess that falls off when treating your pet can be "spread" or used again around your home. Simply apply to pet on a hard surfaced floor and sweep up excess to be used in treating other areas of your home that may be infested.
The most difficult part is leaving the diatomaceous earth for the 2 week period. People usually sprinkle their entire area (for carpet and hard floors) and then vacuum or sweep walking paths. But remember, diatomaceous earth is non-toxic and healthy to consume by people and pets. So even if you do get a little on your feet, your pet licks some up or your busy toddler happens to get a little bit on them, no worries! "Utopian Earth" brand DE is the safest solution for homes, people and pets!
Please make sure you get the food-grade diatomaceous earth and not the pool-grade kind; pool-grade diatomaceous earth is harmful and should never be used indoors or around the home for pest control. You can also use food-grade diatomaceous earth on ants, termites, snails, flies, maggots and slugs plus many more. If you wish travel to our contact page and click our Facebook link to find out about other insects DE can treat for as well as many other interesting facts.
How does food grade diatomaceous earth (DE) work for internal detoxification?
Many harmful substances entering the body have a positive electric charge. Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth is a semi-conductive mineral and porous. When warmed by body heat it develops a negative charge and gives off electrons. These negatively charged mineral ions attract positively charged unhealthy microbes, bacteria, viruses, free radicals, and other harmful heavy metals that may be lurking in your body. Silica works similarly to antioxidants found in high-antioxidant foods because it retains its traits as a stable particle even while continuously suspended in a liquid medium, allowing it to fight free radial damage. It’s broken down into a colloidal form, which acts like a detoxifier for the blood since it carries an electrical charge that attaches to free radicals and other harmful toxins. Silica particles can then neutralize the charge of free radicals and remove them from the body through sweat, urine and feces, which slows oxidizing damage and has anti-aging effects.
A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that silica also helps eliminate heavy metals from the body, such as aluminum and cadmium, making it perfect for a heavy metal detox. In studies, it has been shown to have a high-aluminum-affinity and reduces aluminum and cadmium availability from the human gastrointestinal tract.
It has been postulated that parasites in the stomach and digestive tract are pierced by the sharp edges of the DE. Another theory is that they voluntarily leave because of the alkaline ph and negative electrical charge of the DE. DE does NOT affect beneficial bacteria. Removing toxins and parasites results in a much healthier body with a stronger resistance to disease.
Food grade diatomaceous earth absorbs methyl mercury, E. coli, endotoxins, viruses, organophosphate pesticide residues, and drug residues. Its positive effects include killing intestinal parasites, balancing the intestinal flora, killing viruses, and absorbing toxins. It’s great for intestinal cleanses. The only side effect known is its ability to irritate the lungs if inhaled; it is a very fine powder. The working mechanics of DE are the same for both animals and people.
Daily recommended Food Grade DE feeding rates:

Puppies: 1/2 to 1 Teaspoon
Dogs under 35Lbs: 1 Teaspoon
Dogs over 35Lbs: 1 Tablespoon
Dogs over 100Lbs: 2 Tablespoons
Cattle, Dairy cows and Hogs: 2% of dry feed ration
Chickens: 5% in feed ration
Goats, Sheep, Alpacas, Lamas: 2% in grain

How does food grade diatomaceous earth work for controlling cholesterol? (DE)
Silica can hinder the effects of coronary disease by fortifying blood vessels. Studies confirm that with age, silica disappears from the aorta, the heart's key blood vessel— thus weakening its critical connective tissue, and resulting in a greater risk of cardiac arrest. Studies have shown diatomaceous earth to significantly lower cholesterol by removing plaque from arteries but gently scrubbing their walls with it's abrasive texture keeping arteries and veins supple and clean. It can also help to regulate blood pressure. Silica also aids in the repair and maintenance of vital lung tissues and helps to defend them from pollution.
How does food grade diatomaceous earth (DE) absorb and deodorize?
A lot like baking soda, using diatomaceous earth is an excellent natural way to neutralize odor in the home. Here are some great ideas of how to freshen things up:
Sprinkle some DE into the dry bottom of your outdoor garbage cans to help reduce that stink.
Mix DE into your cat’s litter to neutralize the smell and help absorb liquids twice it’s weight.
Dust the soles of those smelly shoes in the front closet and let sit for 8 hours. Tah-dah! No more stink.
Carpets get a lot of traffic and absorb a lot of smells. Vacuum your carpet, powder with DE and leave for 12 to 24 hours. Vacuum again and enjoy the freshness!
How does food grade diatomaceous earth work as a facial scrub & mask?
Because it is very fine, diatomaceous earth makes a gentle facial exfoliant and mask. In addition to it’s main component, silica, DE also contains minerals such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, selenium and phosphorous. Since minerals can be absorbed through the skin, this is a wonderful way to complement a mineral-rich diet.
To use: Mix about 1 tablespoon of diatomaceous earth with water, milk, aloe vera juice or diluted honey to make a thick paste. Using your fingertips, lightly massage the paste onto your face using small, circular motions. Allow the paste to set for 1-2 minutes, then gently remove with a warm washcloth using small, circular motions. This last stage is when most of the exfoliation occurs. Follow with toner (if you use it) and a moisturizer
Homemade Diatomaceous Earth Toothpaste
The main thing here is to go for a certain consistency. You can add what suits you, and make sure it is a squeezable consistency.
This remineralizing toothpaste will not taste like commercial toothpaste, so the flavor will take some getting used to, if you’re not familiar with alternative toothpastes. I have no problem with it because I’ve been making it for years, but just be prepared for the change.
4 tablespoons food grade diatomaceous earth
2 tablespoons bentonite clay (or replace with same amount baking soda/DE)
1/4 teaspoon green stevia powder OR 2 teaspoons xylitol (Some people prefer to use Xylitol, and I have used it before. It will make your toothpaste nice and sweet and is purported to have properties very beneficial for teeth. Without the xylitol it is not as sweet.)
15 drops peppermint, cinnamon, lemon, or orange essential oil – add more to your preference. Use the best essential oils and those of high quality.
5 drops trace minerals (optional)
6 tablespoons coconut oil (Be sure to see Notes on coconut oil below recipe) – add more as needed to make preferred consistency.
medium sized bowl for mixing
non-metallic spoon for stirring (bentonite clay shouldn’t come into contact with metal)
squeezable silicon containers (<—I love these!) or a glass jar
Combine diatomaceous earth, baking soda, bentonite clay (if using), stevia/xylitol and stir to mix well. Add peppermint oil, trace minerals, and coconut oil, stirring well.
Spoon or pour into your container.
Treat Head Lice Using Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth!
While medicated shampoos are touted as the best way to get rid of head lice, you have to decide whether you really want to slather your child’s hair up with pesticides… especially when they may not kill the lice and there are other effective alternatives. Utopian Earth's Food grade diatomaceous earth is one of them.
DE is non-toxic to humans, although you should be careful to avoid breathing in the dust, especially for a prolonged period.
For lice treatment, first place a t-shirt upside down over your child’s head so the collar forms a seal around the scalp.
Apply diatomaceous earth to your child’s hair, being careful to keep the dust inside of the t-shirt “bag.” Tie off the open end of the t-shirt and massage the DE into your child’s scalp. Allow it to sit overnight, then shampoo it out the next day. This should be followed by a thorough combing with an extra-fine comb to remove the eggs. You may need to repeat the treatment once a week for three weeks.
So if you're looking for an all natural way to deal with lice and avoid chemical treatments, Utopian Earth food grade diatomaceous earth would be the best way to go. Remember, a healthy lifestyle makes for a healthy family.
